What is the MOST Overrated Home Healthcare or Wellness Product You Have Ever Seen?
This is kind of a fun blog post and that it is a commentary on healthcare consumerism and the interest in psychology that has brought some products into favor and some that has faded rather quickly. When I talk about overrated I'm talking about products that have become exceptionally popular and their popularity does not seem to yield an equal amount of health in return. You can argue that if a product is popular that means there must be some good attributes about it but I would also weigh that against is that a product of consumer approval or physical improvement? In my experience the two are very different someone can like something that's easy but that doesn't mean it's good for them.
And just for the sake of comparison I'm gonna go back a pretty long way because products can fall in and out a favor many times over and that could be for a number of reasons whether they are popular or not or the products are less available than they used to be any number of reasons. For example it could be said they had cheap plentiful vitamins are overrated I would tell you that they are overrated because many of them have inferior unabsorbable amounts of vitamins and minerals. I could also say that these products have a significant number of binders and fillers that act against the absorption process but are necessary to keep them shelfstable for much longer than they should be. Other great example would be resistance bands, these products are meant to bring a mild amount of resistant to stretching routine. Most often what you find and studies have proven that stretch bands are equally as effective as proper slow stretching without them can be. This is because people tend to choose stretches and exercises with the bands that they like or find it easier to do a standard stretching involves more areas of the body without the bands and how they would work which means you're less likely to create over compensations with simple stretching rather than using resistance bands.
Finally, the one product I would consider the most overrated would have to be a TheraGun these products are relatively new to the consumer market but have been around for quite a long time. And they are products in which I find the most user error. Most people do not read manuals and most people do not think critically about the use of a product because they assume if it's for sale it must be safe. Even the simple act of doing the research online to see if it's a product that makes sense for you and your individual needs for a lot of people it's not worth the doctors visit or even looking for the most simple accurate up-to-date clinical information. The product I most often see in my practice as a therapy product that people use incorrectly and then on more than one occasion has caused permanent injury is one of these guns. I tell people to use them at their own discretion for their particular problems but if they want my opinion I think that they're a bad idea and I don't think people know how to use them correctly.
