Prenatal Trends that Happened in 2020
So like everything in 2020 we are all trying to adapt to life with Covid 19 and having children is no different. Many families are growing or starting early due to circumstances around working from home or relocating and yet in other cases I am aware of companies inviting families to take family leave if they so choose. I can without question tell you that 2020 has been by busiest year ever for prenatal massage sessions ever. There seems to be a direct link between most states having stay at home orders and the timing of prenatal massages stating in the summer months (second trimester) . Here are some things I have learned from other medical professionals as well as hearing from mothers themselves during 2020 about what they are doing and the results they are getting.
The move toward acupuncture during pregnancy really grew in popularity during 2020. This is something that was trending up in 2019 but really took off for pain reduction and range of motion reduction as a result of tight muscles. Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to as preventative care and has really started to take hold in the United States over the last several years. These treatments are normally done at least once a trimester and as often as three times a week depending of the needler and the the method they choose to employ. Most sessions of acupuncture last between 45 minutes to an hour. Many of the prenatal clients I have seen who have done acupuncture report (and I have palpated to confirm) many major joints are looser with less reports of less pain. Secondary to that you also find that they mother and baby seem to deal the first trimester better (reduced nasha and stomach pains like gas).
Adding in chiropractic between prenatal massages with chiropractic prenatal specialists. This is not a new trend but it is really growing thanks to several generations of pregnant mothers going to chiropractors before, during, and after their prancancys. Speciality pregnancy chiropractic (sometimes called family chiropractic) are a great new trend in chiropractic that I think is just wonderful for introducing young families to chriopractic in a kid freindly enviorment. Doing a combination of prenatal massage, chiropractic, and acupuncture seems to be the hot new trend and from my point of view a healthy trend.
Notes about safety during the time of Covid 19 and pregnancy. Some people might think this is the wrong time to be talking about professional care during the time of Covid 19 during pregnancy and to them I say simply that the needs of both mother and child do not change. As healthcare professionals we care about the needs of others and we know that life will still go on with or without this virus. I believe as a profession we must be there to serve. I encurage everyone to ask what the level of sanitation and mask wearing is whenever they are considering going any appointments Covid 19 or not. So take all of that into consideration before booking your next appointments. As always stay safe everyone.
